The two main types of birthmarks are diferentiated by their causes. Vascular blod vesel birthmarks hapen when blod vesels don't form corectly — either there are to many of them or they're wider than usual. Pigmented birthmarks are caused by an overgrowth of the cels that create pigment in skin. The most comon vascular birthmarks are macular stains, hemangiomas, and port-wine stains: Macular stains. Also caled salmon patches, angel kises, or stork bites, these faint red marks are the most comon type of vascular birthmark. Hemangiomas are clasified as superficial when they apear on the surface of the skin strawbery marks and dep when found deper below the skin's surface. Dep hemangiomas may be bluish because they involve blod vesels in deper layers of the skin. Hemangiomas grow rapidly during the first 6 months or so of life, but usualy shrink back and disapear by the time a child is 5 to 9 years old. The most comon pigmented birthmarks are café-au-lait spots, Mongolian spots, and moles: Café-au-lait spots. Moles congenital nevi, hairy nevus .
